It sometimes not very easy to get a website listed in DMOZ, although it helps in achieving higher search engine ranks especially in Google so its importance should not be neglected.

Through this article I will provide guidelines on what you should do while submitting your website to this directory.

What is DMOZ?

DMOZ is an important directory also known as The Open Directory Project (ODP), classified into different categories full of websites.

Getting listed is free in this directory where pages are manually reviewed before inclusion.

Benefits of DMOZ listing

Since page rank is a significant factor for high search engine ranks i.e. the higher the page ranks the better the chance Google finds your web page.

DMOZ has a high page rank therefore it helps a website page rank value leap to higher levels.

Huge number of websites is in queue for editor’s review; therefore it takes a long time to see listing results due to limited editors for each category.

We ask ourselves sometimes why our website is rejected by editors, what has gone wrong when everything done seems so right.

In order to know that the delay is not your fault, concentrate on submitting website in the most appropriate category because submission in different category from what your website talks about will lead your website to be improper place for review, what happens next is the editor transfers it to somebody else & the process goes on until the it reaches its category which might take very long time.

Also sites with unique quality content are included therefore you should put emphasis on placing text content with relevant keywords otherwise site could be subject to rejection.

Rejection of a website could sometimes not be notified, to know whether your website is accepted or not, check by typing URL address & see results.

DMOZ editors are always seeking out useful websites for review so once the above guidelines are followed properly this means you have done your best, so leave the rest to them.

Perhaps you, like me, have web hosting that includes, free of any extra charge, unlimited autoresponders. That being the case, you might be inclined to balk at any suggestion to start paying for them.

Recently, however, I made the switch to paying a monthly fee for unlimited autoresponders. Am I rich (with money to burn)? Have I lost my mind?

Actually, I consider this move to paid autoresponders to be a wise decision. Here are some reasons why you might want to pay for an autoresponder service.

1. Sequential Autoresponders: Although many web hosts offer unlimited autoresponders, each autoresponder is only capable of sending one response. Building business relationships with paid autoresponder services can thus increase your sales.

2. Tracking Capabilities: The autoresponders that come with your web host don’t have built-in tracking capabilities. Tracking customer response with paid autoresponder services can lead to more effective advertising campaigns.

3. Deliverability: A very large number of your newsletter subscribers are not getting your newsletter if it is sent using your web host’s mailing list program. Improving newsletter delivery with paid autoresponder services will improve your bottom line.

4. Legal Protection: Since the e-mails you send are hosted on the autoresponder service’s servers, you are insulated from false accusations of sending spam (unsolicited commercial e-mail). Protect yourself legally with paid autoresponder services.

You could also consider buying an autoresponder program (or script) that will allow you to run unlimited, sequential autoresponders from your websites. However, they can be expensive, require some technical skill, and still have some disadvantages.

For example, since you are hosting your own autoresponders, you might still have issues with deliverability and legal protection.

Paid autoresponder services, with their many advantages over other autoresponder systems, can increase your business profits.

As you may already know, keywords are an essential part of search engine optimization (SEO). And the usual approach recommended to finding the right keywords to target with one’s site involves the ideas of demand, supply and KEI (and/or CID). I would like to propose that one thing is missing in this research approach.

What is missing is a consequence of one of the major advantages of the Internet. Let me explain . . . When I use the Internet to look for information, or software, . . . I don’t care about what country is hosting the site, nor do I care about the nationality of the owner of the site. I am only concerned about finding what I am after. So, for me, when I use the Internet, the fact that the world is made up of countries is not something I think about, nor is it an issue because the Internet has in some ways effectively removed the existence of country borders.

Yet, it is this very positive aspect of the Internet that, I believe, leads us to perform incomplete keywords research when we look for keywords to target with our site.

You see, while the Internet has helped us forget about the existence of countries, when it comes to keywords, we must not forget that the world is made up of countries. The reason for this is that the demand for keywords can be country specific. This means that a keyword in high demand in one country, may not be in the same demand in another country. And in some cases, a keyword in demand in one country will not be in demand anywhere else.

To illustrate this idea, consider the following demand numbers for the stated keywords, as reported by Overture (the research being done in June 2005).

Using the keyword “keyword”,

- Australia: 669

- Canada: 17

- United Kingdom: 10,770

- USA: 125,177

Another example, looking at the keyword “meta tag”,

- Australia: 127

- Canada: 15

- United Kingdom: 2,653

- USA: 10,851

And still another example, looking at the keyword “meta keyword”,

- Australia: 10

- Canada: 0

- United Kingdom: 57

- USA: 552

If you had a web site that dealt with SEO and you were looking for keywords to target, then surely the above results would prove interesting. For example, you could see which of the 4 countries above had an interest in what your web site is about. This in turn would tell you which countries you should target, and which you could safely ignore.

In case you are wondering how we obtained the above results . . . We did some basic research at the Overture site and found that it wasn’t all that difficult to do. We also found that Overture provides the demand data in 19 countries around the world, covering Europe, Asia, North America, South America and Australasia. We need to point out that some areas were better represented than others. South America, for example, is represented by 1 country only, while Europe is covered by 11.

By going to the Overture site, anyone can likewise discover how to use Overture to research the demand for keywords in any of the 19 countries it supports.

To go back to the title of this article . . . I feel, and I hope that you will now agree with me, that any research on keywords that does not take into account countries is not complete. For one thing, don’t you want to know where your visitors are most likely to come from?

In case you are not convinced about the point I am trying to make, I will try to explain in my next article other reasons why I think that proper keyword research should take into account countries.

Serge M Botans

Serge M Botans is the CEO of Meta Keywords Advice, a web site that provides advice on keywords. Free evaluation available. He is also the inventor of CID, which is an altenative to KEI.

In April of 2000, Saturday Night Live aired one of the few truly classic sketches outside of the 1970s and 80s. The sketch is a spoof of a VH1 “Behind the Music” episode featuring Blue Öyster Cult and the recording of (Don’t Fear) The Reaper (watch it here).

The sketch stars host Christopher Walken as famed producer “THE Bruce Dickinson,” with Will Farrell on cowbell along with a faux Blue Öyster Cult. The whole joke centers around the fact that (Don’t Fear) The Reaper has a cowbell percussion element that will never be more obvious than played by Farrell.

Here’s the point.

Someone came up with the idea for this sketch simply because they paid closer attention to (Don’t Fear) The Reaper than most everyone else. It’s the same with copy… the copywriter who digs deeper into product research and the mindset of the prospect often finds the gem that others don’t see, which leads to a killer promotion.

Successful content relies on the hook, the angle, the tiny little element no one else takes time to notice. It’s not that others are more talented than you, it’s that they work harder finding the winning difference.

In the blogging game, there are two typical winners:

The person who gets the scoop.

And the person who notices, thinks about, and amplifies the cowbell.

Guess who endures?

Because a great many designers, developers, web masters and business owners in today’s market conduct their business primarily by way of the Internet, in all likelihood they will never come face to face with clients or business contacts. Convincing people of our integrity from a distance definitely presents a more formidable task, but one that can be overcome. How? By giving site visitors the facts!

Gain Your Client’s Trust!

If your goal as a business owner is primarily focused on helping your clients increase sales, improve efficiency, prevent a crisis or understand why a particular strategy might work for them, you must do whatever it takes to gain your clients’ trust. To be chosen for their next project, you have to find a way to prove yourself.

Alleviate a Lack of Connection!

One great strategy that can boost project inquiries is through the appropriate online presentation of your skills, experience, and professionalism. One of the best ways is through a factual and professionally prepared bio presentation. A well prepared biography can alleviate the lack of connection you have with your clients plus a descriptive and authentic presentation of your experience can add valuable credibility to your business.

What Is a Bio?

A bio is most appropriate when incorporated into a web site, proposals, business plans, portfolios and press kits. Most often entrepreneurs, artists, writers, designers, web developers, business owners, professionals and consultants use a bio. But what exactly is a bio? It’s a portal into your professional experience or your company’s growth and expansion. It is a condensed version of your career history designed to give potential clients insight into who you are and what you about. However, while your bio is the short story of your professional life, keep in mind that it should highlight the most important aspects of your experience so that it demonstrates your credibility.

What’s Included in a Bio?

As you prepare your bio, remember its purpose: to make a strong statement that boosts your credibility. Consider first the types of people that might be interested in your services or products. What kinds of information do you think a prospect would want to know? What will impress them? As an example, web designing and development have become highly competitive fields, therefore you must show prospects why they should choose you over your competitors. Don’t be hesitant to do a bit of boasting, but don’t lie about having done something you haven’t achieved. There’s nothing wrong with presenting yourself dynamically, but never make anything up. It can come back to haunt you.

The First Few Seconds!

The first few seconds of reading your online presentation are the most critical. Since you’re attempting to convince viewers that you have what they want, convey your expertise proudly. Ideally, your presentation should be no longer than a page. Here’s a list of the key points your bio might contain:

1. Reference your name and business title.

2. Share your business philosophy or mission statement.

3. Illustrate your qualifications and strengths.

4. Explain how you got involved in your particular business.

5. Note how many years of experience you have.

6. Mention some of your goals and successes.

7. Outline the background of your company.

8. Add education or any specialized training you’ve had.

9. List any special associations to which you belong.

10. Include licensing if it’s a necessity to your credibility.

11. Describe any awards or special recognition you’ve received.

12. Identify the thing that sets you apart from everyone else.

Should You Get Help?

Writing about yourself can be a daunting task, as it may appear as self-promoting or arrogant. But there is a way to express yourself honestly without appearing arrogant or conceited and it’s called telling the truth! When information is conveyed honestly, it never appears as smug. But if you find it difficult to write about yourself, consider having a professional prepare your presentation. It’s often much easier for an outsider to be objective about your experience. CrunchGear is part of the Michael Arrington TechCrunch network. In this chat John talks about what he sees as the future of Web 2.0, social media and publishing.

We also talked about what its like being part of the “Axis of Gadgetry” with Engadget and Gizmodo. John is former Editor in Chief for Gizmodo, so I got to dig up some dirt and good stories about the fierce competition in the gadget reporting world.

Finally we covered social marketing and other things John thinks are most important for aspiring authority site owners. You won’t believe how many posts he made daily when he was working on CrunchGear alone! Nor how many they make now with writers around the world contributing 24 hours a day.

The move comes just a year after Sugar agreed to let NBCU package and sell its inventory alongside that of iVillage.

A blog post about the decision gives little indication as to Sugar's precise motives, though it's common for maturing publishers to create a sales team as soon as doing so becomes feasible.
