Is Your Email Marketing Working?

This is a question which is on the mind of all business owners who participate in an email marketing campaign for the purposes of promoting their business. In fact questions regarding the effectiveness of any type of marketing endeavor should be asked regularly to ensure the marketing efforts are producing the desired results. Asking these questions on a regular basis and continually evaluating the effectiveness of the email marketing campaign will help to ensure the email marketing campaign is working well and remains effective whenever changes are made to the marketing strategy. This article will highlight why it is so important to evaluate your email marketing strategy often and will also provide a few tips for evaluating your email marketing strategy.

Evaluating your email marketing strategy on a regular basis is very important because failure to do so may result in your efforts being essentially a waste of time. Email marketing may be a cost effective way to advertise your business but there is some time, money and energy involved in planning and executing an email marketing campaign. If the campaign is ineffective and nothing is done to attempt to make the email marketing campaign more effective your business is wasting resources by continuing to invest in this type of marketing strategy when it is not generating profit for your business or even interest in your products or services.

It is important to regularly evaluate the effectiveness of your email marketing strategy but it is even more important to set goals before you begin the process of evaluating your marketing efforts. This is important because without these goals it can be difficult to determine whether or not the email marketing efforts are effective. For example your goal may be to increase the number of sales you make per month. Evaluating whether or not you are generating more sales each month is a fairly simple process. However, if your goal is to generate more interest in your products you would use website traffic as opposed to sales to evaluate the effectiveness of the email marketing campaign.

Once you have determined how you intend to evaluate you progress you should be able to easily determine the effectiveness of your current email marketing strategy as long as this is the only marketing you are currently doing. This is because if you have more than one marketing strategy in use at once you cannot be sure which strategy is driving customers to make purchases or visit your website. When you decide to evaluate your email marketing strategy according to specific goals you should take care to ensure you are not currently running other types of marketing in conjunction with your email marketing effort. This will help to prevent confusion about which type of marketing is producing the desired effect. It will also help to prevent business owners from mistakenly believing email marketing is producing a desired effect when it is actually another marketing strategy which is helping to product the desired effect.

Customer surveys are very important for evaluating the effectiveness of an email marketing campaign. Asking customers how they heard about your products or services is an excellent way to determine whether or not many of your customers are being enticed to make a purchase based on your email marketing efforts. Additionally, these surveys can be used to obtain more detailed information about the email recipient’s reaction to the email marketing campaign. Customers can provide valuable feedback about topics such as the layout and appearance of the email to the ease of readability of the content included in the email. All of this information can help a business owner determine how to design future emails to achieve a desired effect. Armed with this information the business owner can design subsequent emails which incorporate many of the qualities previous customers found to be useful and avoid qualities which were viewed as useless in the past.

What’s “Targeted Opt-In Email Marketing” you ask? You know those big “sign-up boxes” on websites that offer something for free in exchange for your name and email address? That’s called an email marketing “opt-in” box and you need to be using one as a Realtor or agent on your website. Why?

I’m going to assume you have a real estate website or blog already set up. If you don’t, you need to get that puppy started as soon as you’re done reading this post. Otherwise, there’s no way you can use the email marketing tool I’m about to explain.

Your real estate website itself is a vital marketing weapon in your marketing arsenal and there are a pant load of pieces that need to be in place for it to be effective. I won’t go over all of them now though. For now, I’m going to focus on one of those pieces that’s at the top of the list; “targeted opt-in email marketing”.

The goal of your website is to drive prospects to it, let them know what kind of Realtor or agent you are and hopefully convince them to become clients of yours. In a nutshell, that’s essentially what you need to accomplish to be successful and rake in the dough. An utterly fantastic way for prospects to get to know you, on a personal and professional level, is by collecting their names and email addresses (with their permission) in exchange for something you give them for FREE that has real value.

On many websites and blogs, you’ll see opt-in boxes to subscribe to the Realtor’s or agent’s mailing list or newsletter. That’s all fine and dandy but how boring is that? If you were the prospect on a Realtor’s or agent’s website and you had the choice of signing up for a plain old “mailing list” or “5 Ways to Save ,000 on Your Next Home Purchase”, which one would you choose? Yea, of course, you want to know about the ,000. That’s exactly how you need to be thinking when using an opt-in box for your email marketing.

So, Step 1 to using your email marketing opt-in box effectively is to make your opt-in box enticing. Make your prospect curious. Give them a reason to take what you’re offering them. A dull “mailing list” offer isn’t going to shock your prospect enough into typing his/her name and email address in that opt-in box. You need to get crazy!

The marketing ideas or endless when it comes to deciding what to offer a prospect for free in return for their name and email…

* “FREE 10-Minute Interview with Yourtown’s Funniest Realtor”

* “9 Ways to Avoid Selling Below Your Listing Price”

* “3 Tips on How to Sell Your Home for ,000 More”

* “FREE eBook, “The Secrets of Buying ,000 Below Market Value”

Get your creative email marketing juices flowing and come up with something your prospect wants and be sure you deliver on it. Don’t skimp on the information. Give them everything you promised and more. You want to wow your prospects and over-deliver. That’s what’s going to start this relationship off right and give you the highest chance of turning your prospects into clients.

Step 2 is picking out a company to use for your opt-in email marketing. These companies are called “autoresponders” and just like real estate agents, there’s no shortage out there to choose from. But if you’re like me, having too many choices is just as bad as having too few.

What autoresponder companies do is give you templates to choose from for your opt-in box. This is what goes on your website, like the one I have on the right of this page. You can typically customize the template with text and color so it fits in with your website.

The really cool thing these autoresponder companies allow you to do, once you’ve collected a prospects name and email through your opt-in box, is have a sequence of emails sent to your opt-in email marketing list automatically AND on the days and times you specify. If you wanted, you could type up a year’s worth of emails for your opt-in list and not have to touch another button the rest of the year. The autoresponder’s software does it all for you. This is exactly how you can deliver your freebie that you offered your prospect automatically.

Step 3 is about those sequential emails that you programmed to be sent out to your opt-in email marketing list. Those emails can be your “free 7-day e-course”, “free report”, “5 ways to blah, blah, blah”. If it’s a free report on 5 “ways” to do whatever, you can write up each “way” in a separate email and have each one sent out each day. This way, you’re not manually sending out emails one-by-one and your prospects will become familiar with you over 5 days instead of just 1 single email with no follow up emails. It just saves you a ton of time, which we’re always lacking as Realtors or agents.

Wait. Let me stop for a second because you might be thinking you to need to be a member of the “Geek Squad” in order to set up one of these opt-in boxes. You don’t. If I can do it as a member of the “wish-they-could-turn-on-a-computer-club”, then anyone can do it. Trust me.

It doesn’t hurt to have the right autoresponder company to help you though. I’ve used a few in the past but I’ve been sticking with Aweber for a long time now. They seem to have put a lot of time and money into their video tutorials as well as making their software a piece of cake to use. It’s literally just writing text and copying/pasting. My 4 year old could probably set up my opt-in email marketing better than I can with Aweber.

My final recommendation, after you’ve chosen a freebie to giveaway and have set up your opt-in box with the initial emails you want sent to your prospects, is to continue the relationship. What I mean is don’t just stop communicating with your prospects after they’ve received your freebie. There’s no exact science on this but I would keep in touch with them every 2-4 weeks. The tricky fine line is not emailing your opt-in list so much that they get sick of you and unsubscribe. But you also don’t want to neglect them and have them forget who you are. That’s the balancing act you have to play with and why I give you a range of every 2-4 weeks. Use your gut, use your judgment. Think about how often you’d want to hear from you.

Sorry, one more thing… after you’ve sent your freebie to them over the course of 1-7 days, you can send future emails to your entire opt-in email marketing list with a push of a button. You don’t need to email them one-by-one. At anytime, you can just write up an email and send it to all your prospects on the list. Nice and easy!

At its most basic level, email marketing is simply staying in touch with your customers through email. While you could choose any number of ways to contact your customers, like the phone, regular mail or even in person, email is one of the least time consuming methods of marketing that you can employ. You can advertise, promote, inform, invite, thank and have any number of other communications with your customers through email.

One of the most effective ways to go about email marketing is to address a targeted demographic and tailor your message to suit them. Singling out a segment of the population like this and focusing your attention on them is known as segmentation.

Email marketing is one of the most cost-effective ways to stay in touch with your target audience, especially when you compare it to traditional forms of marketing like standard mail. Not only does email offer the business owner a low cost option for their marketing campaign, but the message is delivered quickly. Another great advantage of email communications with your prospects and customers, is that they can easily forward the information to their friends. You can also track your email marketing efforts and continue to fine-tune your marketing efforts as you continue to develop new marketing strategies.

Email Marketing is a Great Wing Man

As great as email marketing is, though, it really is the most effective when it is used as a supplement to your main advertising campaign. It works really well for rounding out your standard forms of advertising, and while it is not particularly effective sanding on its own, it is highly effective when combined with other forms of marketing. For example, you have to have a website for your clients to use, and hopefully it has some kind of shopping card capability.

That way, when a prospect gets your email offer and wants to act on it right now, they have a place to go shopping right away. Your website will actually be the hub of your marketing efforts, so you will also use other marketing strategies to get visitors to your site like PPC advertising or SEO.

You may also use article marketing to get your information out to as many people as possible. Once you develop an Internet marketing plan, then you can come back to your email marketing strategies to fine-tune your message and target a specific segment of the population to really drive your message home.

With email marketing there is something that you should keep in mind. Since it is very budget friendly, and it is easy to administer, you always run the risk of saturating your prospects. Just because you can send an email to thousands of people at the click of a button, does not mean you have to. So be very mindful of what emails you are sending to you customers and prospects and how often you are sending them.

The last thing that you want to happen is that you lose a customer or potential prospect. What can happen is that if you send too many emails, your recipients begin to find no value in your emails, and they simply delete them without reading them, or worse yet, they block your email address or mark it as spam. Now you have not easy way of communicating with your clients and prospects. So make sure that you send only emails that your recipients will be likely to find useful.

When used properly, email can be a powerful tool in your Internet marketing efforts. It is also one of the best ways to stay in touch with your customers without being too aggressive as long as you are mindful of not overdoing it. Used properly email marketing can be a very effective tool to build and maintain your base of customers.

If you are currently participating in other types of Internet marketing but not email marketing you should seriously consider why you are avoiding this type of advertising. This is important because email marketing can be a very important part of an Internet marketing campaign. Many business owners avoid email marketing for fear of being accused of spamming. Internet markets may not have a clear understanding of what is spam and what is not so they avoid participation in email marketing campaigns to avoid the potential for being labeled a spammer.

Why are Internet marketers so afraid of being accused of being purveyors of spam? This is a common fear for a number of reasons. First of all there may be harsh penalties associated with sending spam emails. Recipients of spam have the option of reporting the spam to their Internet service provider who will investigate the validity of the claim. If the originator of the email is determined to be a spammer there can be harsh consequences.

Internet marketers are also afraid of email marketing because they believe it will not be well received by potential customers. This is an important concept because Internet users are bombarded with spam each day. Receiving this quantity of spam each day can be frustrating and can anger some Internet users. These Internet users are not likely to be receptive to email marketing. The fear that these potential customers will view email marketing and stray to competitors keeps many Internet marketers from taking advantage of this type of marketing strategy.

However, it is important to note that despite the prevalent problem with spam, many Internet users are quite receptive to email marketing. This is especially true in situations where they specifically requested to receive more information from the business owner regarding his products and services. Potential clients are particularly receptive to email marketing which provides something of value to the recipient of the email. Emails which contain in depth articles, useful tips or product reviews may be appreciated by consumers.

Additionally, items such as e-newsletters and correspondence courses offered via email can be of particular interest to potential customers. E-newsletters are typically longer documents than traditional email marketing pieces and can provide a great deal of additional information to the email recipient. Email correspondence courses may be offered in short segments and typically amount to a significant amount of information which is likely to be greatly appreciated by the email recipients.

One final way to prevent email recipients from viewing your email marketing efforts as spam is to only send the emails to recipients who register with your website and specifically request for you to send them additional information and promotional materials. This opt in formula is ideal because it ensures you are not wasting your email marketing efforts on recipients who are not interested in your products or services. It also ensures the recipients of the email marketing campaign do not view the informative and promotional materials they are receiving as spam.
