What It Is

rssHugger is a new website developed to help bloggers promote their blogs, and to help visitors discover new blogs that write about subjects that the readers are interested in. Through the power of the internet and viral marketing, rssHugger looks to bring blog writers and blog readers closer together.

You get a free account for 10 years (like the web is going to be anything like it is now in 10 years, lol) for writing a post about it.  Hence, this post.

Since I’ve just signed up, this isn’t a review.  Just a new site alert.  I will report back with my findings once I have had time to check it out thoroughly.

On a public training webinar over ago I stated that Google would start experimenting with and eventually implement a user voting system to help them rank sites.  Something like a Digg button to thumb up/down sites that would give Google qualitative data to go with their mathematical data used to rank sites.

TechCrunch and  Search Engine Journal report today that the first part of my prediction has begun.  And now everyone is claiming they saw it coming, lol.

Right now you can only use this feature in Google Labs implementation on personal search.  You can re-order results and bump results up and down with an arrow button.  You can even entirely delete a site with an “X” button.

The second part of my prediction, that Google will eventually implement a voting system that will go beyond their current measurement of bounce rates by leaps and bounds, is yet to be realized.

But I will stick to my guns and say that people will have a say in the SERPs in some fashion in the future.  Algorithms can be manipulated.  So can social voting networks.  But in order to get qualitative feedback on the value of a page you simply must include the surfer in the equation.

Tell me if this sounds familiar.

You sit down in the computer for a few minutes, hoping to whip up a quick blog post. Then an idea hits you. It’s vague at first, but it has a certain sparkle of possibility. You start constructing a post, becoming more convinced with every word that you’re onto something.

The feeling grows and grows until your fingers are flying across the keyboard. The words are flowing, and you’re saying exactly what you want to say, exactly the way you want to say it. You bring the post to a close with an ending that you can only describe as, “Perfect,” and then pause to read what you’ve written.

A smile spreads across your face. It’s clever, original… brilliant. You only hesitate for a second before posting it to your blog. “I can’t wait to see what they say about that,” you think. You walk away from the computer, sure you’ve written a masterpiece.

A couple of hours pass and you come back to reread your post. As you scan through it, you feel a weight in the pit of your stomach. This post isn’t brilliant. It’s arrogant, disconnected, and desperate for attention.

A trusted source told me a Federal Trade Commission decision on Google’s acquisition of DoubleClick could come by the middle of December. Wow, now that could make for some serious holiday celebration and/or lumps of coal depending on whose side you’re on.

“You can make a lot of money on the Internet doing nothing!” That’s the number one Internet marketing myth.

It’s an urban legend, of course. But yet, that ideaology is still pervasive on the Internet.

So, I’m here to give it to you straight. Yes, you can make a lot of money on the Internet. But you first have to take the time necessary to educate yourself on Internet marketing. And after you do that, you have to work your butt off!

Now I’m sure many of you reading this article don’t want to hear that. And those guilty of helping to perpetuate the myth point to the success of the current “flavor of the month,” Brad Fallon.

However, what they don’t tell you is while Brad is doing exceptionally well right now, initially him and his wife Jennifer busted their butts, working day and night fulfilling their many orders.

All of the successful people I know work hard like that. In fact, some of the most successful people I know work the longest hours.

Take me for instance. Most mornings I get up at five or six o’clock, because I can’t wait to get started. And most nights, I don’t get offline until around 10 or 11:00.

Years ago, I listened to Internet marketing “gurus” share that they had lists in the hundreds of thousands, and I was all ears. Up to that point, I had not managed to get my lists above 60,000 (after many years of consistently working at it).

After a little further investigation, some of them shared with me that they often purchased new list members in batches of 25,000… 50,000… even several hundred thousand. Knowing the value of each of my individual list members, based upon how much each spent with me per year on average, visions of riches started dancing in my head.

Then this little voice in the back of my head asked if this wasn’t DANGEROUS! Wouldn’t I get spam complaints… or something. How could I just buy email addresses and add them to my list? Was this legal? why didn’t more people know about this, and why weren’t more people doing it.

Yesterday local news aggregator and community Topix announced a partnership with MediaNews Group to enable Web forums and comments for the newspaper publisher’s sites, including San Jose Mercury News and Denver Post. Other sites including GoErie.com, Zap2It.com, KOB.com, and CapitalTimes.com are also using Topix’s social platform.

Topix has shifted gears over the past year or so, switching its domain from .net to .com, and adding its own social news features in the hopes of becoming a hub for local citizen journalism.
